X + Y = ME + YOU
When Emily needed help with her Calc III homework, she called upon Sam, a Junior Fellow in her freshman residential college. After a few study sessions, however, it became clear that there was more to their equation. The Bucknell sophomore made his move at a Chi Phi paint party. At first, Emily says she didn’t think of Sam in a romantic way, but his kind and playful demeanor won her heart by the end of the semester.

THE HALFWAY POINT
At the time of their engagement, Emily and Sam were living in Arlington, so they looked for wedding venues within a two-hour radius of D.C. The couple’s essentials included onsite accommodation for their families, who would be traveling from New Jersey, as well as an outdoor ceremony space and a body of water on the property. “We toured many venues from Charlottesville to Leesburg to Alexandria to D.C., but as soon as we toured Brittland Manor, we knew it was our perfect venue,” Emily says. As it happened, the manor was also halfway between New Jersey and D.C.

HER SAVVY DRESS HACK
One thing Emily knew for sure: she did not want a strapless dress that would inhibit her dancing. But that plan was quickly sidelined when she set eyes on her Dany Tabet ballgown. “The long train was just dramatic enough and I had buttons added all the way down the back,” she says. Emily also had an excellent seamstress who put her anxiety to rest, with removable straps to ensure there would be no dance floor wardrobe malfunctions.
THE BIG DIPPER
Emily and Sam’s recessional song was a string rendition of “Roses” by the Chainsmokers, an ode to their college years and parties at Sam’s fraternity. “We loved watching our friends’ faces as they realized what song it was,” Emily says. Another favorite moment for the couple was performing the first dance they choreographed through private lessons with Arlington Ballroom. “I loved the cheers towards the beginning, when we were doing a simple turn or small dip; I remember chuckling to myself and thinking, ‘they have no idea what’s coming,’” Emily says.
