to
Michael E. Busch Annapolis Library 1410 West Street , Annapolis, Maryland
While a good number of great films have been based on not-so-great books, few great films have been made out of novels that have remained in print, studied, and admired for many decades, even centuries. In this series we’ll examine four outstanding movies based on classic works of literature. Each movie is introduced by area cinephile Ann Glenn with info about the film’s production, actors and a post-screening Q&A session.
Frankenstein (1931) Monday, April 8, 6pm
Although not the first time Mary Shelley’s famous 1818 novel was put on the screen, (Thomas Edison made the initial film of the story in 1910) this effort by British director James Whale is the movie that solidified the book’s place in popular culture. It made a star out of Boris Karloff and his performance as The Monster became one of the most iconic science fiction/horror film characters to ever come out of Hollywood.
